Trust and Genetics Research in Diverse Communities
The goals of the ELSI2/Trust project is to inform a more general consideration of the ways in which genetic research on complex disorders in disadvantaged populations can and should proceed. We have three specific aims:
- To explore attitudes toward genetic knowledge, research, and health care for cancer in three urban cultural communities (African-American, American Indian and Latino);
- To build on these discussions by articulating the sources of both trust and mistrust toward research in these communities; and
- To work collaboratively with community members and organizations to identify policies and procedures that can address sources of mistrust and strengthen trust in possible future genetic research and health care.
