Professional Research Assistant

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs of the University of Colorado Denver is seeking a professional candidate to work in a part-time position (.45 FTE) on its Wiconi Teca Waste Project based on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.

Nature of Work
This position will coordinate data collection for this research project, which is designed to educate middle school students on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases.

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Assist the PI and Project Director (PD) in coordinating the collection of research project data.  Specific duties involve:
    1. Coordinating local data collection efforts in Pine Ridge, SD to ensure that data is collected in accordance with the study protocol
    2. Organizing and managing quality reviews
    3. Intake and coding of raw data shipped from the field; assembly of survey and data collection materials for shipment to project staff in the field
  2. Analyze project data and maintain the project tracking database including intake and processing (quality review) of electronic data received, generating tables and reports for inclusion in manuscripts and progress reports to the sponsoring agency.
  3. Monitor all required participant tracking documentation to ensure accuracy and timeliness of submission and adherence to HIPAA regulations.
  4. Purchase and track respondent compensation payments..
  5. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Able to synthesize large quantities of complex information and trouble-shoot discrepancies;
  2. Detail oriented;
  3. Efficient in organization and have excellent verbal and interpersonal skills;
  4. Able to work well in a team environment and observe strict rules of confidentiality and appropriate communication;
  5. Available for a flexible work schedule;
  6. Knowledge and interest in HIV-prevention or school-based programs, preferred.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a research setting; intermediate to advanced experience with the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, Outlook).

Salary Range
$13,500 - $14,400 (.45 FTE, 18 hours per week)

Professional Research Assistant / Study Coordinator

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs of the University of Colorado Denver is seeking a professional candidate to work in a part-time position (.80 FTE) as a Study Coordinator on its Wiconi Teca Waste Project based in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

Nature of Work
This position will be primarily responsible for coordinating all aspects of an HIV prevention research project in a northern plains tribe conducted by the American Indian and Alaska Native Programs.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Organize and coordinate all aspects of school-based research with local youth.  In particular, this work will focus on sexual risk, mental and physical well-being, and other health-related factors. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that project data is collected in a manner consistent with the study protocol; organize, track, and monitor all aspects of project data.
  • Coordinate meetings with school officials and teachers to obtain approval of project plans, and direct project data collection.
  • Organize and facilitate small group discussions (focus groups) of project materials and experiences.
  • Work with tribal and community organizations, area schools, and youth groups to coordinate community input and feedback over the life of the project.
  • Coordinate research assistants involved in project implementation and data collection.
  • The Study Coordinator will be a member of the Pine Ridge Field Office for the University of Colorado and will be expected to contribute to the operations of that office.  These duties include helping to answer questions from community members about activities, assist with other projects, and other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Data collection for this study is based out of our field office in Pine Ridge, SD.  The Principal Investigator and Project Director for this study are based in Denver, CO.  This position requires the ability to function independently in the coordination of all aspects of this research study.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and observe strict rules of confidentiality and appropriate communication;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Organization and efficiency;
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of Lakota language and culture preferred;
  • Interest in HIV-prevention, school-based programs, and community health preferred.

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, Outlook); Have a valid driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance, and be willing to travel reservation-wide, and occasionally out of state.

Salary Range
$24,800 - $28,000 (.80 FTE, 32 hours per week)

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs (AIANP) is seeking a Grants Management/IRB Specialist to manage the research administrative activities and IRB protocol submissions for a variety of research and program grants.  This position will work directly with the Program Head on all of his current grants and new grant submissions. This position will be responsible for managing the research administrative activities and IRB protocol submissions for a variety of AIANP research and program grants.

Research Administrative Activities:

  • Completion, routing, and submission of annual continuation applications, carryover requests, and budget revision requests related to three principal program grants.  These program grants have complex budgets containing multiple cores and/or small research or pilot projects.
  • Completion, routing, and submission of annual continuation applications, carryover requests, and budget revision requests related to other current and new grant applications (R01s, contracts, etc). 
  • Correspondence and communication with NIH and other agency Grants Management Specialists and Project Officers relating to all research administrative duties.
  • Assist in the development, compilation, routing, completion, submission and monitoring of all new grant applications submitted by Program Head (program grants, R01s, etc.)

IRB Responsibilities:

  • Completion, submission, and monitoring of Continuing Review Applications and protocol amendments as required for the core components and research/pilot projects related to three principal program grants, current R01s, and contracts.  Also responsible for protocol submissions related to closed research projects where the data is currently being used to write publications.
    • Submission and monitoring of PHI violations as necessary
    • Completion and submission of annual reports to regulatory agencies as necessary
    • Provide guidance to PIs and faculty at the AIANP on all IRB and HIPAA matters
  • Assist other investigators at the AIANP with Human Subjects Sections of new grant applications and IRB related issues as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Significant experience with the grant application process, and communication with sponsors; the IRB process and with HIPAA regulations; and with multi-site, scientific studies that involve sensitive aspects of the human condition
  • Familiarity with community-based research and the difficulties of working outside of highly controlled study environments
  • Able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to work semi-autonomously
  • Able to actively problem-solve, employing proactive, positive action steps

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree plus significant experience in the areas noted above, Master’s degree preferred.
Intermediate to advanced experience with spreadsheet software applications (MSExcel preferred).

Hiring Range:  $44,700 - $55,000

Contracts and Subcontracts

  • Draft subcontracts and amendments for review by University’s Office of Grants & Contracts (OGC), route for signature and monitor progress of routing
  • Monitor subcontract expenditures and invoicing timelines
  • Assist Principal Investigators (PIs) with the negotiation of contract budgets, draft contracts, route for signature and monitor progress of routing
  • Monitor receipt of funds and invoicing by OGC
  • Work with OGC to close out contracts and subcontracts

Respondent Compensation

  • Conduct monthly audit of outstanding respondent compensation (money orders, gift cards, etc.)

  • Approve all departmental purchase orders and requests for purchase orders; reallocate credit card charges
  • Respond to all audit requests and follow up as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of funding mechanisms related to a social sciences or medical research environment; direct experience managing federal grants and contracts preferable
  • Ability to apply basic audit principles in the daily management of policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of procurement procedures; direct experience with University or State procurement procedures preferable
  • Experience managing complex budgets
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree plus three years experience, or Master’s degree.

Hiring Range:  $44,700 - $55,000, commensurate with experience.
