SPECIFIC AIMS/RESEARCH GOALS:
This study has 2 Specific Aims:
- To better understand the kinds of care required and provided in a tribally owned and operated nursing home,
- To explore issues unique to the provision of care in this cultural context.
RESEARCH DESIGN:
- Medical record reviews of all nursing home residents, including demographics, diagnoses and disability statuses, care needs/issues, and medical and social histories.
- Semi-structured interviews with 5 nursing home residents exploring social history, life in the facility, and care received. Semi-structured interviews with 25 staff focusing on characteristics and history of the facility, care provided, content of jobs, and challenges with providing care.
- Photography of daily life in the facility.
PARTICIPANTS:
Staff and residents of a tribally owned nursing home in the Northern Plains.
MEASURES:
- Semi-structured interviews.
- Medical record reviews focus make extensive use of the Minimum Data Set (MDS).
